Aysegul A Sahin

Dr. Aysegul Sahin received her medical degree at the University of Ankara School of Medicine and completed a residency at the Oregon Health Sciences University. She completed fellowships at the University of Iowa and MD Anderson. She serves as section chief of Breast Pathology and director of the Breast Pathology fellowship program. She has more than 15 years of extensive hands-on experience training clinical fellows. She serves as the Director of Educational Activities in the Department of Pathology. In this capacity she oversees all aspects of 12 fellowship programs (surgical pathology, all subspecialties, and T32-funded research fellowships). Under her leadership, all training programs were modified to incorporate the new ACGME core competencies and a number of initiatives instituted, including clinical competency committee activities, competency assessment in quality improvement, and implementation of new documentation requirements as part of the new accreditation system. She has been a member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee of MD Anderson since 1999 and has served in multiple capacities, including chair. In recognition of her contributions to institutional and local teaching activities, she was inducted into the Kenneth I. Shine Health Science Education Academy at the University of Texas as a Distinguished Teacher in 2009. She served on the Education Committee and, in 2014, was elected to be President of this prestigious academy. As president, she served as co-director of the academy’s annual meeting in 2015. She has actively participated in and continues to organize, speak at, and promote a significant number of meetings and conferences related to pathology and breast health. She has presented at an average of 20 local, national, and international educational events yearly. In recognition of her educational activities, she has received the University of Texas Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, the MD Anderson William Randolph Hearst Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, and the MD Anderson Faculty Educator of the Month award twice. Her major research interest is translational breast cancer research that includes morphologic features of invasive and in situ carcinomas and high-risk lesions, biomarkers of breast cancer progression, and prognostic and predictive marker evaluations in breast cancer. Dr. Sahin is Director of the Breast Tumor Bank and Pathology Core leader of many NCI-funded research programs, including MD Anderson’s Breast SPORE and P01 grants. She has published over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts on breast pathology.
