Brendan Dickson

Dr. Dickson is a Pathologist and Director of the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto. He graduated with an MSc in Experimental Pathology from Dalhousie University and MD from the University of Toronto. He undertook residency training in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Toronto and a clinical fellowship in bone and soft tissue pathology, Pennsylvania Hospital, University of Pennsylvania. His primary research interests include: improving the diagnosis and prognosis of bone and soft tissue tumours through the application of novel molecular and immunohistochemical assays, and elucidating the molecular mechanisms of sarcomagenesis. Much of his research activities are collaborative in nature and relate to the application of mouse models towards interrogating the molecular mechanisms of sarcomagenesis. His team has recently developed a prognostic index for predicting patient outcome with osteosarcoma, as well as the development of molecular assays for multiple bone and soft tissue neoplasms that are in clinical use at Mount Sinai Hospital. He has also been awarded the Peter Cruse Award for the History of Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for his work on the history of Virchow’s triad. Dr. Dickson has consulted with Cancer Care Ontario on various quality initiatives. He has authored 49 peer-reviewed primary publications and multiple invited articles/reviews.
