Adjunct Professor, Peking University Health Science Centers and TianTan Hospital affiliated with Capital University

Dr. Zhang, Professor and Shaw Endowed Chair, is board-certified in anatomic pathology and neuropathology. Dr. Zhang participates in surgical neuropathology and autopsy as well as ocular pathology services.

Dr. Zhang obtained his M.D. from the Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China, and Ph.D. in cell biology at DUnited Kingdome University, Durham, North Carolina. He completed his residency in anatomic pathology and fellowship in neuropathology training at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Zhang is exceedingly interested in molecular mechanisms, particularly mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, related to neurodegenerative disease development and progression. His lab has particularly focused on the relationship between important Parkinson and Alzheimer related proteins and alterations in the function of brain cells leading to neurodegeneration. He has also been deeply involved in proteomics-based discovery work as well as targeted validation of candidate proteins with mass spectrometry and immunoassays of proteins related to neurodegenerative disorders, typically via collaborations involving multiple medical centers, including across different countries. Recently, he has extended his efforts to understanding how key proteins transfer between the brain and the periphery, and how understanding of these processes, including glial responses, can be leveraged to develop novel and accessible biomarkers or identify novel targets for existing and future neuroprotective therapies.
